The Guadalupe River has many moods and activities along it's many access points. The river is located in Central Texas Hill Country and is a wonderful place to visit. Some of the activities that the river attracts are Whitewater Kayaking, Kayaking, float trips, drinking , camping and fly fishing. Fortunately for club members, you need not fly fish to enjoy this area or river. The area near river has many options for accommodations from small cabins, hotel chains, RV parks, State parks, B&B's. Most of our information on these "Fly" pages, are geared to planning a club trip for the main purpose of fishing. However, members are welcome to join us and car-pool with the idea of enjoying some of the many activities available in the area.

Fly Fishing the Guadalupe River

Texas Parks ad Wildlife (TPW) set aside a 9.6 mile section of the river-between the easternmost bridge crossing on Highway 306 down to the second bridge crossing on River Road-as a special regulation zone. In this Special Reg. zone Anglers are allowed to fish with artificial lures only and harvest one fish, 18 inches or larger, per day. Due to the water warming as it moves down stream from the Damn, , the best fishing is the first 6 miles just below the Damn. The Guadalupe is considered a year round fishing destination. The best season is fall/winter during the Rafting "off season". Most fly fishers try and fish the area between the first and second bridge on Hwy 306. However, fishing is supposed to be good for another 2 miles south of the the second bridge.

Texas unlike Florida and other Public right of way states, allows adjoining property owners to "claim" shore line as private property. This policy creates major access problems for all types of sports. Un-fortunately, the Guadalupe river, sits in a High density zone thus has "private" property signs all along it's shore. The easiest way to gain access is to raft down and stop along the way at good fishing holes.

GEAR

8.5-9.0ft, 4-6 lb weight rod is good. Floating line with a 10-ft. leader tapering to 3X or 4X. A backup fly should be tied onto a 5X or 6X tippet.
