How to fit a backpack

Things to bring: Planning:

Big Bend Plan on 12 hour days, plan on 1/2 gallon per 12 hours/per person.  Two gallons per person.

A Water bladder: The goal is to have water accessible and readily available while walking. One of the best ways is to use a bladder with a drink hose/mouth piece.  Place the bladder in the top of your backpack and thread the hose to your shoulder area.  Bladder size: 1.5-2 liters.

Need a lightweight cooking pot. Med size holding 4-6 cups. Stainless steel or Titanium is best. aluminum cooking pots tend to burn and are less durable.

Cheap Bladder: Target for $9.50

Plastic measuring cup (about 2 cups) can be used as morning cereal bowl, after that it's coffee/tea (cleaning out bowl), and used for lunch and dinner. Cheap-Wal-Mart.

Headlamp: Double or Triple AA batteries with adjustable light. You want to be able to tilt light down rather than have a headlight with a fixed out position. Your camping friends will appreciate not having your light shining in their eyes. Good options LED bulb and regular bulb, water resistant or water proof , light, head mounted.

Headlamp Cheap: Fry's - RayOVac brand ~$10

Compass: Not needed if you can not read a map:)

Other drinks…Liquor flask-small plastic bottle-Vitamin "V" or other light weight drink. You will not want much. You do not want to become dehydrated-plan on small social amount not getting ripped amount.

For bread, use loaf of Russian bread (round loaf like from a bakery)

Socks: Double layer socks (real thin rayon dress socks as the liners, cheapest dress socks from Wal-mart work great)

Typical military-style socks ($0.89 at Wal-mart) Check hunting section - since a lot is on sale right now

STOVES: MRI Stove works well.  Whisper light are light, but you need two for redundancy

Primus blows up!!!  1 stove between about four people

Army Navy Surplus - $6.00 stove with combustible tablets (German writing)

West side of 35E @ Valwood (north of 635)

MTR (ready to eat) at Indian store - mixed vegetable curry. Indian store at belt line and 75 - has about 200 flavors. 

Also at Beltline and MaCarthur.

Pharmacy - alcohol wipes unscented. You can get a travel package that's re-sealable (e.g. Wal-mart travel section)
